AR, VR, MR: So what’s the difference?

Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) are all terms surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI). While they sound similar, there are fundamental differences between the three terminologies.

Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented reality means parts of the digital world are visually implemented on top of a user’s view of the real world. A great example of this is Faceapp, a simple idea that became a global phenomenon by masking characteristics of aged-skin over an image that a user could upload, giving them a projected image of how they’d appear when older. Mobile community game, Pokémon GO, is another example of an app that uses AR by placing digital creatures into a user’s surrounding environment via their mobile screen.

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual reality places a user within a simulated world that they can view through their VR Gear or Head Mounted Display (HMD). The user’s surroundings are generated solely through Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) and isolates the user’s experience from the outside world. YouTube recently added an option for users to watch videos in an immersive environment by using a VR headset, and new games are being released that use a VR headset, placing the user inside the game.

Mixed Reality (MR)

Mixed reality is a recent introduction that amalgamates VR and AR features. It allows digital objects to be introduced in a virtual world that users can then control. There can be simultaneous realities in the virtual space that a user can interact with. MR also acts as a platform to hold virtual conferences, meetings or webinars for users who may be in separate locations. Microsoft HoloLens used this technology in their video chat software, Skype, that allowed users to interact with each other in a single virtual room.

As the tech industry continues to grow, new updates and developments will only get better over time. Upgrades and plugins will not only enhance a user’s experience, but will steadily become accessible to a wider audience.
